SteamWorld Build may be a citybuilder on the surface, but down below it's a mining and tower defence 'em up - and having lost several hours to my demo build already, it's really something special. It goes right back to its roots, reframing that classic SteamWorld Dig story of mining for gold and treasure with a new, management-style eye for town-planning, while also paying homage to where it all began for these jolly old rustbuckets way, way back on the Nintendo DSi. No, I'm not sure what's going on with the previously announced Headhunter right now either, but in some ways, I'm glad it's Build that's coming out first.Īfter all, it's been a hot minute since the last SteamWorld game came out, and Build is shaping up to be the perfect reintroduction to what made this series so special. As the name implies, this one's a citybuilder, and I've been hands on with an early build of, err, Build, to tell you all about it. If you haven't seen the news yet, Thunderful unveiled SteamWorld Build earlier this evening, the next entry in their genre-hopping series of games about colourful robot pals trying to make their way in the world. Tarah & Thayne's Stone Compass allows them to use Uncontrolled Rage to deal large amounts of Arcane damage without succumbing to Confusion, and Doom allows the party to double-dip every time they damage the affected enemy. After four years away, SteamWorld is back. When an enemy is almost scrapped, the twins use Death Pulse (ideally in a Tag Team Combo with Copernica) to finish them off and deal extra damage to the remaining foes. In this build, however, Galleo is also using Poison to set up enemies for Tarah & Thayne. To round out the Deck, this lineup uses several Tag Team cards - Hamstring, Sleep, Death Pulse, and Double Axe - to increase its damage output and gain further advantages.Īs with Thunderfrost, Copernica and Galleo play off of one another, unleashing power Tag Team Combos. Armilly's Snake Charm allows her to Poison enemies occasionally as well. Tarah's Culling Axe deals extra damage against enemies suffering a condition of their own Inferno or an upgraded Searing Lash can easily set enemies Burning, and finishing out a Heroic Combo with Thunder Wave (thanks to Copernica's Sparking Codex) also has a good chance of inflicting Paralysis. Armilly and the twins share the load when it comes to healing, with Encourage removing pesky status effects. ![]() If that happens, use Drain Life and Patch Up to get back into shape while your opponents lose HP from the damage effects you've stuck them with.Īrcane Detective and Focus make it easier to find the cards you need and to build up the necessary SP to play them. This build needs to keep the pressure on, and can run into trouble if it's put on the defensive. For their part, the twins can increase the pain by casting Doom on the affected enemy and repeatedly attacking with Culling Axe. She can also use Prey to sneak additional poisonous attacks in while Orik and the twins combo off of one another.īy following up any card from Tarah & Thayne with Open Wound, Orik can inflict both Bleed and Poison on an enemy simultaneously. ![]() She will also have a chance of inflicting Poison because of the Snake Charm in her other Accessory slot. By using Issue Challenge, Armilly can taunt enemies into attacking her, which causes her to counterattack thanks to her equipped Black Belt.
